Disabled young sport star praises fantastic centre
08 January 2008
On Thursday last, our Centre was delighted to welcome Matt King, of Langford near Biggleswade, to look around our Centre to learn more about the services we provide.
Teenage rugby player Matt King, was just 17 when he suffered a spinal injury in his first game while playing for London Broncos' under-19 squad. The injury left him paralysed from the neck down and ventilator dependent.
However, Matt is a highly determined young
man, and in between his University studies, in November 2007,
he completed the New York Marathon - the first person with his
level of injuries to do so.
Talking about the Centre, Matt commented " .....having come down to see what its (the centre) all about, I am amazed by the range of equipment and advice on offer".
"I want to help get the message out to all disabled people that there is nothing to stop them achieving their goals."
Speaking after the visit, Mick Dillon, Chief Executive of the Centre said, " We are extemely grateful to Matt for his time and enthusiasm.
"There are many types of disabilities, but it does'nt mean someone can't continue achieving, albeit sometimes with support, or in a different way."
Last year the Centre supported 5,000 local people with
disabilities, their families, carers and fellow
professionals. This support covered over 100 disabilities and more
than 110 different topics.
