Advice on Discrimination

05 August 2007

Following our successful BBC radio broadcast on Monday afternoon, if you feel you have been discriminated, follow our helpful guide on what to do next.

It is a very difficult decision for anyone to decide, that how they have been treated, is not acceptable.

Below are 5 steps to assist you, if you feel you have been discriminated against:

1. Discuss

Discuss the lack of access directly with the service provider, i.e the shopkeeper, the doctor, the restaurant. A friend or advocate can assist, if you wish. It may convince them to make their services accessible.

2. Write

If you don't get a satisfactory response, write to the service provider, outlining the areas that  caused you difficulties and ask them what they are doing to comply with the DDA

3. Keep talking

Once they realise how seriously you take this matter(and that they have legal duties) they may be ready to make changes.

4. If this still does'nt work....

If you don't get a satisfactory response to your letter or discussions, you may want to consider taking matters further. This could include taking a legal claim to the County Court.

5. Finally, remember 6 months....

Under the DDA, there is a 6 month time limit for legal action from the incident of discrimination
